Are Headaches Robbing Your Life?

As a practicing chiropractor in San Luis Obispo, I know first hand that a headache can ruin anyone’s day. The pounding of your head with every heartbeat makes it tough to concentrate at work, and, more importantly, at play. If you are like most people, you may take a few aspirin, Tylenol or ibuprofen, and continue on with your day, oblivious to what may be causing the headache in the first place.

Most headaches have been shown to be coming from the neck

The source of pain is found in structures around the neck, which have been damaged. These structures include joints, ligaments, muscles and cervical discs, all which have complex nerve endings. Damage of these structures can therefore cause pain in the head.”

How can you know if your headaches are neck related?

If you answer “Yes” to the following questions, your headaches may be coming from your neck.

1.Have you ever had trauma to your neck?

2.Have you ever played any “rough” sports such as football or wrestling?

3.Have you experienced many “minor” sports injuries?

4.Is your neck stiff or, at times, difficult to move?

5.Do you recall any past falls, injuries or car accidents?

What can you do about your headaches?

Most of the answers for headaches today only work to take the pain away temporarily and can be toxic over time to your entire body. If your headaches are coming from your neck, there are some simple steps you can take to deal with the cause of your problem:

1.Get an evaluation by a chiropractor: Chiropractors are specialists in spinal function. The examination you receive will tell you whether or not the structures in your neck have been damaged and can be causing the pain in your head.

2.Get the appropriate treatment. The most up to date clinical evidence shows that the appropriate treatment is a combination of chiropractic care, massage therapy, stretching exercises and strengthening exercises. This overall approach not only helps to relieve pain, but to stabilize the area.

3.Exercise regularly: The most up to date research shows that regular exercise, especially yoga and aerobic exercise like walking, helps to relax muscles and decrease pain.

How do I find a good chiropractor?

If you are like many people, you may be wondering how to find an experienced chiropractor. I would recommend asking friends and family for a referral. If you cannot find one, I invite you to come in to our office and meet with me to see if we can help you. We will be happy to schedule a FREE 15-minute No-Obligation Consultation where you and I can meet so I can best understand your health concerns. Next, I will do a 3-point evaluation which will allow me to see if you have a problem and what further tests need to be done. At that point, I will let you know exactly what tests need to be done and what costs will be involved. At that point it will be your choice as how to proceed. I will tell you that we will not push you into any care you are not comfortable with. At our office, it is always your choice.
